Collagen Sport Protein Powder

We’ve recently taken a particular interest in Collagen Sport protein powder, one of the natural gluten free protein powders that incorporates collagen, as we’ve seen numerous positive reports on how collagen protein has reduced joint pain in both osteoarthritis sufferers and athletes. Plus it’s also a relatively inexpensive source of protein.

One of those reports, in an earlier edition of ‘Current Medical Research and Opinion’, said a study found that orally taken collagen supplements accumulate in the cartilage and help to reduce the pain and increase mobility in patients with osteoarthritis.

Some years ago there was a report  in the ‘Science’ publication where researchers found that taking a collagen powder drink daily for three months reduced the number of swollen and tender joints in patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Another study showed that people taking a collagen drink that contained five grams of collagen powder for five weeks, significantly increased the flexibility of their skin.

Collagen Sport Protein Powder – Growing in Popularity

Collagen Sport protein powder is now growing in popularity with athletes, fitness enthusiasts and people trying to improve their quality of life, because it’s thought that collagen supplements can stimulate production of the cells responsible for maintaining joint-cushioning cartilage.

Where you see collagen described as hydrolyzed, this simply means that the collagen protein has been enzymatically processed to improve its absorption into your bloodstream, which of course means it’s more easily absorbed by your body.

Collagen Sport protein powderSo we have put Uncle Merv on a course of Collagen Sport powder. We chose that product because it’s produced by Collagen Sport Neocell Laboratories and we know the high quality of their powders. Merv is in his sixties, but still works out at the gym 2-3 times a week and he’s in pretty good shape, but does suffer with osteoarthritis, particularly in the upper spine.

He’s a regular user of gluten free protein powders anyway, as he’s well aware of the need for a recovery protein. He also finds it useful to strengthen muscles and to assist recovery from muscle fatigue. So he’s started to use Collagen Sport Protein Powder, not only to keep up his intake of protein, but also because we believe it will help relieve the pain he suffers from osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis, which is also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis, and it’s associated with a breakdown of cartilage in the joints. It occurs most frequently in the knees, hips and spine when wear and tear breaks down the cartilage in your joints.

When you suffer from Osteoarthritis, joints become stiff and your cartilage loses its elasticity, and consequently the joint is more susceptible to damage or injury. In time, the cartilage can wear away and this decreases the joint’s ability to act as a shock absorber. The reduction of cartilage means that the bones can actually rub against each other, causing inflammation and severe pain.

The protein ‘collagen’, is a key component of cartilage that in a healthy state contains about 75% water, and this lubricates and nourishes the cartilage, as well as acting as a shock absorber.

Collagen also accounts for about 50% of the body’s protein content, and is the chief protein of connective tissue for skin, muscle, bone, tendons and ligaments.

For a long time collagen was dismissed by some as being an incomplete protein, so it was never as popular as whey protein and casein, for example.

But more recent research indicates that it’s a multifunctional protein that is suitable for a wide range of people, from those with osteoarthritis who are trying to lessen activity-related joint pain, right through to people who just want to improve the health of their skin.

Collagen Sport Protein Powder Report

We will report back soon and let you know how Uncle Merv is getting on with his Collagen Sport Protein Powder.

In the meantime since we’ve started using Collagen Sport Whey Isolate Complex though, our initial impressions are certainly encouraging. We’re trying two different flavors; French Vanilla and Belgian Chocolate. Both of them are the same nutritionally and both mix equally well, although it’s quicker and easier with a blender. The manufacturer claims you can mix it with a spoon, and you can, if you’re not in a hurry!

First thing you notice when you take the lid off the French Vanilla, is the delicious aroma. Each scoop of powder is 45g and provides a generous 30g supply of protein and collagen, which is made up of 15g Whey Protein Isolate and 15g Super Collagen per serving. Neocell suggest one or two scoops in 6-8oz of water or low fat milk, but as we only use water our report is based on that.

Collagen Sport protein powder, as well as being a gluten free protein powder, is also completely sugar-free. The French Vanilla flavor has a very pleasant taste and the Belgian Chocolate an okay-taste; certainly not unpleasant though, but we’re not a lover of anything chocolate flavored. It should not be forgotten of course, that everyone has different taste buds and what we find so-so may be loved by you, and vice versa.

So far so good, it mixes ok and it tastes good. Same as with most protein powders though, it leaves a tiny amount of fine gritty stuff at the bottom of the glass. But we don’t ever waste anything, so we swill it around the glass and gulp it!

In addition to a plentiful supply of protein and collagen in each serving, Collagen Sport protein powder  also contains a generous supply of other important ingredients including twenty types of vitamins, amino acids and minerals.

But what’s particularly interesting for our specific purpose is the Pomegranate Extract that Collagen Sport contains, because although Pomegranate is known to be a very special antioxidant, which fights the cell-damaging free radicals that you generate during exercise, Pomegranate also provides anti-inflammatory benefits.

This is an excellent, natural product that contains no artificial sweeteners or flavors and it’s:

  • Gluten free
  • Wheat free
  • Sugar free
  • Lactose free

So remember, each serving of Collagen Sport protein powder provides a generous supply of protein and collagen, it’s a good source of daily vitamins and minerals, as well as providing the antioxidant power of Pomegranate extract.
